British Standards Institute highlights iShareMaps |

PAS 78 was developed by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) in collaboration with BSI. It outlines good practice in commissioning websites that are accessible to and usable by disabled people.
PAS 78 covers areas such as: - how disabled people use websites
- how to define accessibility policy or websites and relevant web technologies;
- accessibility testing and maintenance
- contracting web design and accessibility auditing services
The BSI is in the process of preparing a book ‘Web Accessibility - Making PAS 78 Work’ to help organisations understand why web accessibility is important, and provides step-by-step guidance on managing a successful and accessible project. The book discusses the problems associated with GIS applications and features a screen shot from the My South Tyneside iShareMaps application captioned as follows: "The GIS system implemented on the South Tyneside website provides data in text form as well as graphically. This approach (here using iShareMaps by Astun Technology) provides greater access to information to those who cannot easily use graphical systems." |
